these flowers share a large pot with daisies, snapdragons, lobelia, and dahlia. every morning I check these flowers, deadheading the faded blossoms and marveling at the tiny changes each new day brings. ants make their home in the humid shade of their leaves. occasional ladybugs appear.

one of the nice things about having a “permanent” place to live is having the time and space for flower planters. these happy flowers are sitting beside my front walk, enjoying the shade of a big old tree.

another strange and lovely flower that manages to thrive in the colorado desert. walking through the national monument, your mind constantly shifts from the enormous — the incredible geologic formations — and the tiny — these delicate, tenacious flowers. we were lucky to be there to see these blossoms while they were still soaking in the springtime.

from the front, these daisies are pure paper white. from the back, they are a deep, luxurious people.

I planted a couple of hanging baskets for our front porch. so far, these red lace dianthum are the happiest and most prolific of the bunch. once it gets warmer, maybe the others will cheer up too.

cherry blossoms scattered like snow ~ portland, or

I was lucky enough to be in portland for what seemed to be the only sunny, warm weekend since november 2010! trees and flowers were blooming like crazy, and after the desiccated terrain of new mexico, it was easy to believe that portland was always festooned with flowers. eternally spring. on my way back to the airport, i realized how brief this floral paradise actually is. after just 3 days of full-on bloom, the cherry blossoms were already collapsing, scattering tiny pink petals like snow. the wind carried them in eddies, turning portland into a fairyland.

all flowers are manifestations of sacred geometry, but the straw flower is something else. its sharp, almost chitinous petals etch cosmic patterns with unequaled precision. just bought a batch of this sunburst variety to plant in our garden!
